Technical Capabilities & Materials Development
Sand analysis, customer-specific binder development, and materials research that connect the chemistry to your process.
Sand analysis and system selection.
Our research facility can analyze your sand and recommend a binder system for your application. Understanding the aggregate and operating conditions provides a foundation for evaluating binder demand, curing, strength development, and casting performance.
Customer-specific binder development.
If standard Cast Clean formulations do not meet your requirements, we apply our knowledge of foundries and inorganic binder technology to develop a tailored solution. The starting point is your sand, alloy, equipment, work and strip times, and the performance problem you need to solve.
Research grounded in production.
We work with customers to improve foundry performance and environmental sustainability. Development considers the full sequence, from mixing and mold or core preparation through pouring, shakeout, and sand reclamation.
Beyond foundry applications.
Foundries and Cast Clean are the majority of our business, but not all of it. We also undertake broader materials and process development, including work in areas such as briquetting.
If you have a materials bonding or process challenge outside traditional foundry applications, contact us to discuss its requirements and whether our expertise is a suitable fit.
Start with the facts of your application.
- Materials and sand or aggregate characteristics
- Current process, equipment, and curing method
- Production and handling requirements
- Casting quality or process issues
- Environmental and reclamation goals
A few things worth knowing.
Can we use our existing foundry equipment?
J.B. DeVenne’s product literature describes retaining existing mixers and equipment in suitable applications. Before conversion, the technical team should review your current equipment, sand handling, curing method, and production targets.
Can sand be reclaimed and reused?
Cast Clean systems support dry sand reclamation. The achievable reuse level depends on the sand, casting process, reclaim equipment, and required mold or core properties. Your application should be tested before setting a reclamation target.
Can J.B. DeVenne develop a customer-specific system?
Yes. J.B. DeVenne can analyze your sand, recommend a binder system, and develop a tailored solution when standard formulations do not meet your requirements. Its broader materials and process development work also includes applications such as briquetting.
How do you evaluate shakeout with a sodium silicate binder system?
Evaluate post-casting breakdown and sand removal under the actual alloy, mold or core geometry, pouring conditions, and shakeout process. J.B. DeVenne’s modified silicate approach considers strength, casting quality, and shakeout together. Do not judge every modified inorganic system solely by experience with a different sodium silicate binder.
